We’ve developed an Android application to aide students in forming study groups. Our application will help students find real time study groups with their peers. Using our geolocation technology, students will be able to walk into the library and see if there are other students studying the same topic as them. For the more forethoughtful users students will also be able to plan study groups in advance that others can join. We believe that connecting students to together will produce improved grades, increased productivity, and potential lifelong friendships.
OUR TECHNOLOGY
To build our Android application, we used Android Studio. Android Studio has a whole host of features designed specifically to accompany and speed up Android development. This includes built in version control tools, layout editors, and emulated devices. For our backend, we employed Google’s Firebase. Firebase is a development platform that offers various services that can be added to existing applications. We use Firebase Authentication to drive our sign in and sign up process. Firebase has two options for databases and our application utilizes Cloud Firestore. Cloud Firestore is a NoSQL, document oriented database. Firestore indexes its data using document that are organized into collections versus the SQL method which uses tables and rows. Using Cloud Firestore, we can simply synchronize all users with the database information. Google Maps was used to visualize the location of study groups on our map screen. (For our tests, we use JUnit)

Join a study group with someone that is in the same class or simply post a study session and wait for someone to join.

A cloud messenger allowing study group members to communicate with one another seamlessly.
GEOLOCATION
Every study group uses a custom location that appears on the map as a pin. This tool allows users to visualize study group in real time.
